"Siyahamba" originated in South
Africa, and is said to have been composed in about 1950 by Andries van
Tonder, an elder of the Judith Church. The original
composition was in Afrikaans ("Ons marseer nou in die lig van God") and
was subsequently translated into Zulu by Thabo Mkize. The version
we sing builds to a thundering final climax.
"When I Survey the Wondrous Cross",
was written by Isaac Watts and published in 1707. It is significant as an innovative departure from the
early English hymn style of only using paraphrased biblical texts,
although the first two lines of the second verse do paraphrase St Paul
in Galatians 6:14. The final verse, heard here sung by the whole choir,
is a favourite.
The title song (by John Barry) from "Born
Free" the 1966 feature film starring Virginia McKenna and Bill
Travers as Joy and George Adamson, a real-life couple who raised
Elsa the Lioness, an orphaned lion cub, to adulthood and released
her into the wild in Kenya. The song became a major hit
for Matt Monro, who sang it on the soundtrack.
